IN A DILEMMA

Hi Friends:)

Greetings:)

My laptop stopped working and I gave it for repairs. The repairer told me that it will be necessary to change the motherboard. The cost of the motherboard will be Rs.12000. Even if I change the motherboard the laptop will be old except for the motherboard. So instead of changing the motherboard at this exorbitant cost, I am thinking of buying a new laptop.

I have saved numerous photos and various other details for my future posts. All that is lost.

Anyway, this is all part of the game. In the mean while I would like know from you whether I should replace the motherboard or buy a new laptop.

Needless to say I will be a bit slow in catching up with you since I am depending on my third son David to spare me his computer whenever it is free.

Wish you all the best:)
Joseph

Hello dear Joseph,

I am sorry to learn of the troubles you are having with your laptop. I don't know much about computers but I think it might be best just to replace it with a new one. That way, everything is new and you won't have to worry about anything else failing in the near future.

I've missed you! I hope you can get your computer troubles resolved quickly and can also find a way to retrieve your pictures. I fear we will all be at a loss to miss any pictures you have taken, they are always lovely.

God bless you my friend!

Trudy

Hi Joseph, Your pictures are on your hard drive, not your motherboard, so a technician should be able to retrieve them for you. If your laptop is more than 3 years old, I suggest you replace it. The technlogy moves so fast that you are sure to be pleased with a new laptop. These things are so frustrating, aren't they? Best wishes -- and many thanks to your son. -- Leo

Dear Joseph
Any computer including laptop reaches obsolence after 3-4 years. Technology is moving so rapidly. If your laptop is more than three years old, it is better to go in for a new one rather than just changing the motherboard.
You can get the latest one which will have a host of new features, larger speed, bigger memory & ram, CD/DVD drive & writer etc etc.
You can go in for branded one like Wipro,HCL,Zenith(costlier) or unbranded(cheaper). Unbranded laptops can be got from assemblers - however you can choose the make of monitor/mother board/chip/mouse/key board etc.
Why dont you talk to a few assemblers in Cochin & do a survey before taking a final decision. My recommendation would be to go for a branded laptop.

Good Luck!
Ram

Hi Joseph! Oh yes, as Leo said, your photos should still be on your hard drive! I hope you can retrieve them! If it were me, it would all depend on money....I live quite a modest life, so although I think it would be better to get a new laptop, I'd have to see if I could afford it!

Sorry about the loss. Going for a new laptop is better. As far as data in your laptop the computer guy should be help you to retrieve all of that data without failure.

All the best.

Sorry hear about that, specially the phots maybe you could retrieve them as RR says.

My PC is 6 years old works on Athlon , doesn 't have Pentium, it awfully slow and troublesome.

I am thinking of buying a laptop too. But they are so expensive.
Maybe the new budget will bring the prices down or during festival time I will get a discount offer somewhere.

Should cosy 30,000.

It's hard to say. When mine gave up, I changed all about six months ago. It's always hard on the moment, but it's also a way of cleaning up!

Hello Joseph, pleased you popped by and hope your laptop problems are over.
My mum was a very private person but I do know dad was in the army, for many years in India.
He was visiting his mother when he suddenly passed away in 1947.Mother was a fantastic mother but at times often wondered if life would have been different had he survived.
Have a good day.

Namaste Joseph......You are indeed missed. At this point if you have to replace the motherboard which is essential the computer you may as well purchase a new one. Especially if the replace is very expensive. It maybe better sinking the expense in a new computer.

You know Computers are updated so quickly these days that you will be running threads behind trying to update other things on the old laptop.

Suggestion:
Why not do price comparisons? New laptop verses motherboard for old laptop. Look at the pros and cons of each expenditure then make your decision. I suspect though based on how you put forth your query that you already know what it is you are going to do.

Take care my friend and I am sorry for your computer trouble but am glad its the computer that has issues and not you with health concerns.

Stay blessed and enjoy the rest of your week.

I'm sorry to hear that ur Laptop stopped working. I think its better to go for a new Laptop than spending such a huge money for repairs. Regarding new Laptop, there are many options. Recent trends in Laptop are laid by the brands such as hp,Dell studio and some other. I suggest Dell Studio. It has many great features with a relatively reasonable rate. I think its around Rs.38,000. I'm currently using the same. Its nice.

Greetings, Joseph! I'm sorry to hear about your computer, what a bummer. A master blogger losing his computer is like a master musician losing his instrument. I think you should go ahead and buy a new laptop, if possible. But I know that God will lead you to the right decision as you trust Him in it. Until you get your computer back, I'm sure you'll be continuing with your very worthy labor of meeting new people and taking lovely pictures so that you can share many stories and pictures with us when you have a computer of your own again.

Many, many blessings to you and yours, Joseph! Have a lovely day! :)

That's a story about consumer society, Joseph. Nowadays, consumer rules make us buy new products rather than giving to repair. And I think your reasoning is accurate. After changing the motherboard, you might have to change an other "piece" of your computer in a few months. The price of repairing is well-studied to make people buy a new product, besides.
I love your wisdom about the lost pictures. That's the kind of thing that happened to each of us. A very bad surprise in fact. Especially when these pictures are important, like some of our children for instance. But we have to relativize. Our memories will remain forever in mind, isn't it the most important ?
Hope you'll find the best solution, Joseph, to continue your posts.
Have a nice day.

Dearest Joseph, my advice is probably too late, but I'll share it just in case. In December I lost 10 years of IMPORTANT documents, bills, paperwork, and priceless photos. I saved them to disk, but for some reason, my old computer did something to the disks that made them unusable in other computers, so they are gone. I was distraught. I didn't know if I wanted to ever save even 1 thing on computers again. I thought maybe I would print off everything and file it like in the days before computers. Then my brother brought me a small stick that has more memory in it than my whole desktop computer. It is the length of my finger, and here they are called memory sticks or external memories or external hard drives. For himself he bought a small box that can store about 100 computers worth of information. So now I save EVERYTHING to this memory stick that I can pull out of my computer and take and plug into another computer so everything is with me wherever I use a different computer. If my computer crashes again, I will have all my information on the external memory. They were VERY cheap! I hope this idea might help you. I was able to buy a used computer with very small memory on it instead of expensive computer with a lot of memory on it, because I have the external memory instead.
We rarely buy new things. We are not rich, so we buy used, rebuilt items. That might be a choice for you too.
Blessings,
Sheila

Oh I forgot to tell you. I took the old broken hard drive to a computer expert, and he was able to retrieve a LOT of my important immigration papers and work documents and files and precious pictures of my father who had just passed away. It's worth the small price to ask a computer expert to get whatever he can off the old hard drive and save it to a disk or memory stick for you.
Blessings,
Sheila
