INEQUALITY OF THE SEXES?

You will notice from the above two photos that the girls are sitting in chairs and the boys are sitting on the floor. There is one vacant chair in the front row next to a girl. When I told one of the boys to sit in the vacant chair, he refused.. When I told the teacher to make one boy sit in the chair, she gave me a vacant look and walked away. The students came to see a documentary on Global warming. There were fans above the girls’ chairs and no fan for the boys. The girls watched the documentary comfortably while the boys were sweating, restless and were waiting for the documentary to get over fast.

What do you think is the problem here?

What will happen if a boy sits in the vacant chair or if the boys and girls sat in chairs and watched the documentary?

Is the school drilling into the minds of these students the inequality of the sexes?

Hello Sir,
The backdrop of your blog is more beautiful now. I liked the Santa Claus with the girl photo.

This happens in buses too. Even if the ladies seat is empty, gents hesitate to sit. We are living in a funny society. :)

Hi Joseph,

I don't know... It seems like people are bent on making up rules when no rules are necessary. May we have the wisdom to find all of the right balances in all of the right areas.

Thank you, as always, for sharing. My daughter Linnea greatly enjoys your blog, as I do.

Many blessings,
Mel

Hello Joseph,
I am a Mexican blogger and am very happy to have "discovered" your blog. I find it very interesting because it gives me a glimpse of a country I find fascinating. When I lived in Los Angeles, California, one of my best friends was from Bombay. We lost contact throuhout the years but have always felt admiration and interest for your India.
I included you in my blogroll in order to be updated with your posts.
Best wishes,

I have been trying to decide, Joseph. Maybe seemingly foolish measures are needed to instill in us boys a proper respect for females. However, having a daughter and a grand-daughter who I treasure, perhaps I have a "special interest" in maintaining my position.

I think that there is no harm in being respectful... I was brought up to especially repect those older than me. Now that I see in my society the lack of respect from childern to adults, I understand the need.
I am not so familiar with boy/girl segregation. We are different, but we must learn to grow together and respect each other. Male and Female have different needs, but that does not ever make one inferior to the other... just my thoughts.. May you have a lovely day there!

Danielle :-)

I think Danielle said it all. In my society there is also no segregation between boy and girl, but the lack of respect can be unfortunatelly seen in many other ways...

Thank you for visiting my blog.

There is a great lack of respect that has tact place between the sexes, post the sexual revolution of the 70's & 80's. The thought being that if women want to be treated equally, then there is no longer a need for me to be respectful. I was on a date once, many years ago, where the guy I was with refused to open the door, of the building that we were entering, for me. Needless to say I called a friend to come pick me up. I'm not sure how it works in India, but especially outside of a Christian culture, American men have been taught, my belief is that it's been taught by example, to not show any regard for woman by offering up simple courtesies like, giving up a comfortable chair for the floor or standing. Recently this happened to me, with my Christian friends, where the guys were all sitting and the girls were all forced to stand. Eventually one of the men noticed himself and made the guys in the group go and get more benches for us to sit on. I think that's a reasonable compromise. But it's a bit sad, and disturbing, that 1) women have desired such "equality" with the opposite sex and thereby degraded their own status and 2) that men feel it's OK to disregard women because of their "desire" for equality.

With regard to the pictures there should be a fair balance somewhere. At least by giving the boys fold out fans for themselves, so they can keep cool too. But I don't think that there is anything really wrong with trying to instill a little bit of forgotten, possibly even antiquated, courtesy.
